Carat Scales

Return to Carat Scales

Carat Scales are known for their precision and flawless accuracy.

Most scales are small in size but so exact in their measurements that one would hardly notice the diminished heft. The result is a reliable scale you can carry in your pocket.

These scales are most often used to weigh diamonds and precious stones because in the gem industry, stones are most commonly weighed in carats (not grams).

A stone's weight in carats will usually appear as a fraction or decimal (0.75ct or 3/4ct).

A popular Jewelers' term is TCW; referring to the Total Carat Weight of the stones appearing on a single piece of jewelry.  Earrings, for example, are often sold under the Total Carat Weight of both pieces in a set.

Like the Gram Scales, most Carat Scales can take weight measurements in various different modes.

When shopping for a carat scale, most importantly make sure that carats are a weighing mode option for that scale.

Most Carat Scales take measurements that are so precise that air currents passing over the weighing platform can effect the read-out.  This is why many scales come with a plastic cover specifically designed to protect the weighing platform while the scale is in use.

Most professionals in the industry require their measurements to be down to 1/100th of a carat (0.01ct).  This is a very high level of precision.  All of the carat scales you will see on our Scales Page will measure this precise or better, but it is a good idea to know what level of accuracy you need your scale to have.

A lot of care is put into the look of carat scales and they usually come with professional looking carrying cases.
